Hearing Melissa McClure talk about “speed racer” this and “vintage Mercedes” that, you’d think that fast cars make her knees weak. Instead, she’s discussing a couple of her favorite camera straps from yours truly. “I didn’t want to advertise for Canon by wearing their boring strap. I knew I wanted a Riley G, but I wanted one that fit in my [travel-themed] branding.” A happy owner of our Brown and Blue Speed Racer camera strap, Melissa’s added the 1980s Mercedes design to her “Must Have” list. “It’s all about comfort for me,“ Melissa says, bringing up a theme we’ve seen with most photographers. Even the fashion-abiding ones put coziness at the top of their priority list. “Black slacks, cute black top. Comfortable shoes are a must after carrying around heavy equipment all day!” Favoring TOMS because they have the longest life span even for someone who’s on their feet all day, Melissa reminds us that she’s still a girly-girl at heart. “I like to wear the ones with a little sparkle to them,” she said.
Where does she get her fashion inspiration? “Pinterest! I love looking at outfits people put together on there and it gives me great ideas…People are so creative!” She also suggests searching for the hashtag #OOTD (which stands for Outfit Of the Day) on Instagram.
Her number one accessory? “Bright red lipstick!” Why not a functional piece from her wardrobe or essential camera equipment? Because Melissa knows, like most of us girls do, the true power of this siren shade. Plus, it’s become her signature look, something she suggests every photographer have. “Find what makes you unique and play that up. Once, I walked into a wedding after forgetting my red lipstick and my bride freaked out.”
